A deck is a flat surface capable of supporting weight, similar to a floor, but typically constructed outdoors, often elevated from the ground, and usually connected to a building. To preserve the life of the deck most professional architects recommend to re-stain your deck every two to three years. That said, properly preparing, cleaning and drying the surface before applying a stain will yield the best results for the stain to last at least that long. You want to make sure there are no traces of sealant present on the deck. At West Metro House Painting when we stain the deck we do it by stripping it, staining it, painting it and lastly protecting it by applying weather protectors.
This is the first step in staining or re-staining the deck. If you have a new deck, then this step is not needed. But it is the most important step if your already built or installed deck requires re-staining. If you apply the paint over it, it will not stick to the deck properly. The surface will be deformed and damaged and will considerably shorten the life of a new job. Having it stripped clean and smoothing it out will be the best option before going to the next step.
After stripping comes staining. Staining means applying liquid compound over it. The best thing about staining is that it doesn’t take away or hide the natural texture of the woods. The staining procedure blends in with the design of the woods making it more beautiful while protecting it. After applying liquid, the deck is left so it can dry. We use special brushes for this job and we recommend doing it in slightly warmer months. Not only your deck looks great but it also protects the surface of the wood.
Painting a deck has both pros and cons. The best possible benefit of painting a deck is that the paint is less likely to damage over the years as compared to compound liquid which we use in the process of staining. Another benefit is that you can pick any color of your choice and paint the deck in that color. This is a good option if people are looking for matching the deck with any particular part of the house or making the deck look stand-out in way of contrast by painting it in a very different color. One problem however with painting is that it takes away the natural feature and design of the wood. Whatever you choose, we will be ready to do our job for you.
After the above procedure, we apply the protective coat over the whole deck to make it weatherproof. This step is very important and only comes after we have either stained it or painted it. The protective coat is what makes the deck’s life last longer and protects the deck from harsh weather conditions. The protective coat doesn’t change any color of stain or paint. It is just an extra layer added on top of the paint or stain so it can look like new for a longer period of time.
